These photographs illustrate a cardboard dome model.
The design is a descendant of the Fuller-Kasier aluminium hexagonal domes from the 1950s.
As with those domes, an external reinforcing hex-pent grid would help provide additional stability.
In this model, the flaps are tucked away inside. In any practical implementation, it would make sense to attempt shingling.
